plavidevet said: I know that tomorrow everybody will say: that's football but it still hurts. But no one saw me yesterday when I was yelling at TV Plavi I was watching the match on my laptop at work. I was yelling inside my head "Penalty? That was a flop. A FLOP!" Worst dive I've seen since Phil Neville of Everton took a yellow after his manager accused Suarez of diving ahead of their game in the 12-13 season... |

I would have followed in the tradition of England fans everywhere and smashed the place up. My mother would not have been happy. An England and US fan here as I have cousins in England. I didn't see the hand of god either si, but I went to Argentina last summer. The Argentines still hate England for the Falklands - Islas Malvinas to them - and still revere Maradona - but they admit that he cheated. I heard several times when I was there, "His first goal was a cheat but he beat them with the second." I saw a flip book in a museum that shows still frame photos one by one - flip it fast and you can clearly see his hand to ball. That said, and despite my hopes for the US and England, I would not be disappointed to see Argentina win the World Cup only for Messi. The greatest player the world has ever seen and he won't even be seen as such in his home country until he wins a WC. |

I think there's a lot of people saying this could be Argentina's year - they certainly have a damn good team. As for the Falklands, I think it should just be left out of football. Argentina played a friendly last week, I think, in which their players lined up in front of a protest banner. I doubt they really wanted to do that, rather the call came from high up. I think it's a bit sad that football is used in such a way. So far we have seen some terrible refereeing. Good thing Netherlands v Spain has never caused any controversy in the past - should be an easy one for the ref... |

I think it's a bit sad that football is used in such a way. So far we have seen some terrible refereeing. Good thing Netherlands v Spain has never caused any controversy in the past - should be an easy one for the ref... When we were there we saw a group of about a dozen young girls, 18-20 yr olds, protesting outside the Presidential residence saying that Argentina should go back to war. I don't think they were put up to it by the Christina, [We also saw protests against the government.] I think they were just young, naive, and maybe a bit ignorant. They certainly weren't going to be the ones getting shot at were they? My experience while there was that like many countries there were a lot of people in the capital who complained about Islas Malvinas but those outside of the capital could care less. They were more concerned with good social services being continued rather than a president spending money on un-needed things as part of a re-election campaign (lots of building going on when we were there last summer before the fall election - lots of banners that the president was responsible for the building) As for the banner at a friendly, I agree that probably was setup by the government and most of the players would want not want to be part of it. And yes, football as the worlds most popular sport should be seen as a uniting endeavor, not a stage for politics.... |

As a Scotland fan I think I'll need to adopt a new nation to support for a while, any suggestions? I quite like Portugal for some reason. | 13/06/2014 21:24 |
