zozo2k3, what about your RDF/LDF? Do they get up to much? Five in defence seems excessive, but I'd be glad to hear what you think

My RDF/LDF pick up the slack from the LB/RB on the counter attack. In offense I send the fullbacks all the way to the front, and because they're fast they usually get back in time when I lose the ball, if they don't the RDF/LDF pick up the loose balls. And ofcourse they help cover the middle of the penalty area (which is the most dangerous place in SM). I use my full back not as fulltime defenders, but more like Barca's Alves. So it's not Five in defense per se, because there's 2 that are highly mobile all across the pitch.

That should be the way RB and LB can play - sort of how Chelsea utilize Cole and Bosingwa down the flanks and have their CDF (at least in theory) cover the runs, so its like 3 in defense as opposed to 4 all the time.

my question is, with the recent changes to SM, it seems like you are penalized for having defenders play out of position.

how can the true wing back work in this configuration? because its not necessarily an offsides trap, just pushing the defense forward in attack.

i dont get the recent changes. i deleted all of my prior formations and starting from a fresh start with trial and error (and in the process allowing a TON of goals). any thoughts?

I haven't played any "strong" teams yet after the changes. So I'll have to see how much the slow-down will affect the fullbacks. I never played a high offside trap to begin with, so it won't affect my LDF/RDF/CDF formation, and my MDF is usually playing deep (yes, yes I know, I like Italy's defensive side)... so I don't have many problems in defense so far.

Thanks for this discussion. Reading this post has been useful, helped me critically analyse my thought process. I am a run-of-the-mill lower division team. I don't have high quality full backs which high div teams have. So they cant really contribute to offence. Which made me think that maybe I had better invest in more central defenders (L/R/CDFs).

Tactically, when you are lower div team, you need to chalk out clear responsibilities coz your players rarely have abilities to perform more than one role. A more fluid formation, in which your can contribute to a more than one phase of team play can probably we worked out later. Hence I agree than in lower Divs, the RB/LBs a pretty pointless and just make up numbers. Perhaps they can be more useful was your quality increases and your players progress up the divisions.

To my mind, the DFMs are one of the more underrated players (by market value anyways) in the game. A good DFM can be a critical component in your team in breaking up attacks and launching attacks. I wonder if some higher team use DFMs to perform a Andrea Pirlo sort of role (well, Andrea Pirlo with tackling ability anyways )

you can barely say that DFMs are underrated anymore, the good ones at high level are very pricy now... Many people have already found out how usefull they are 17/01/2012 21:45

I first buying extra DFM for back-up. But can't help to put 2 DFMs in match. Really2 efficient. However, if wing back having a very good "ball steal", "aggressiveness" and of course "speed" that they already have it, it sure help to counter the attack from 3 fwd teams with side attack.

@bunkr, no worries, I thought it was about time something sensible was discussed, posts normally just seem to be twelve year olds complaining about offsides.

I have a similar standard team to you, and yeah full backs are useless. It is interesting thinking about this game and tactics. It's clearly not real football and understanding exactly how the game works is going to be very important.
