True, an excellent goal.
Like my last encounter with Ali ( http://en.strikermanager.com/partido.php?id=17366810&accion=datos ) he rarely threatens my goal, but my team beat the crap out of him on the field and give him free kicks in dangerous positions, one of which he scores. He always scores first, too.

Haha!

It is well said that it is much easier to defend than to attack.

When I notice that my opponents are attack minded (and this is the case every time), it is important to wear them out as much as I can. I ensure that I don't counter attack, or else I'll leave my defence porous, or even worse, my whole half of the pitch. I try as much to complete more passes than my opponents, to commit less fouls (I have failed here though) and also to dodge offside traps.

Somehow, somehow, somehow - my players manage to pounce on the only opportunity they get to have, and score. My tactics do not accommodate that, but it happens every time - and I like it.

And so far, it has been working for me. I have not lost by unreasonable margins.

When I am thoroughly satisfied at my team's 99% efficient defence system, that can manage draws and little wins against top placed teams, I will then seek tactical advice for my attack.

But remember,

Offense wins games, defense wins championships.

It's a nice idea, but in my experience it doesn't work 100% efficiently in reality.
I find that when I get my defense sorted, plugng certain holes, I end up having to unplug them to make my attack better. What I have in my team is my best possible attempt at a sort of equilibrium point, where the payoff is measured in GD.

Substitute
spent the first half of this season going for defensive solidity, works great vs worse/equal opposition, see first 4 weeks of pl season for how it worked vs much better teams. I will make wingers into fullbacks if it kills me tho.

edit: with a team like ali's there is not much chance of facing a team with a >10pt better average.

you don't just make wingers into fullbacks, you train them into WINGBACKS in lieu the much WINGFORWARDS in the game, then you are good to go with your plan.

No shame in that, buddy.
It seemed you set up to not be embarrassed, essentially seeing a 1-0 loss as a victory. As you kind of said, against even/worse sides you can afford to do this if your goal is to avoid relegation, but any ambition approaching topping difficult tables requires something a little more attacking.
All this is obvious, of course, but rather than face a yo-yo problem of being big fish, small fish, big fish, small fish when you go up/down divisions or settle into a division, the PL could actually be useful in this respect in terms of creating a longer-term strategy of learning when to raise and when to fold.
You could try and set up friendlies against similar teams, upper Div 4. No games you know beforehand you will win, no games you know you will lose. This way you'll have a much more realistic yardstick of where you are.
