If there are an odd number of teams, lets say 95 groups, and the top 4 teams qualify, that's 95*4=380, which is not a factorial of 2. The next closest factorial is 512, which is (512-380) 132 more teams needed. Therefore the top 132 teams (after the original 380) will be admitted to the tournament (based on record, then by goal diff (if there is a tie), then by red cards (or something else)). In some sports leagues, these types of teams are called "wildcards" 512 is not that many teams. it's only 9 rounds. I don't know if I explained it well, but that's my attempt. but if im not mistaken, you said a separate cup for each division. Division 1 will only consist of 20 teams, so im guessing you would have 16 teams from div 1 playing in the cup? and 32 from div 2? etc... | 29/09/2011 14:20 |

Ah k. I don't think there are any human teams in Div 1 right now. 32 from div 2 would still be a nice tourney though. Good point. It's a tourney for each division (div 2 would have a separate tournament based on the number of groups in it) It should work for div 3-7 though. |

It's a tourney for each division (div 2 would have a separate tournament based on the number of groups in it) It should work for div 3-7 though. 32 team tourney is good...but that way you will have everyone participating in the cup other than last 4 positions in each group. It works for lower divisions because you have more teams so you get to select top 3/4/5/6 whatever number of teams. But when it extends to top 16 teams, it takes the fun out of it. What I was thinking as an improvement to the current cup is: have only div 7 teams play at first round, then introduce div 6 teams, then div 5 and so forth. That way the teams in lower divisions get further into the cup, and the teams in higher divisions dont have to play teams 20-30 points lower in average. It will also leave some room for a cup for those higher division teams early in the season. Maybe also include a "private cup" feature which would be nice and will be good for filling up some short-term empty days. That is a different suggestion though, and I don't know if it would work or not. |

Ah k, the confusion (sorry! I'm a confusing person) was that you thought it was a server wide tourney  I was thinking of a tourney for each division. Just some prize $, bragging rights (because right now, there is very little chance a div 7 team will win the Striker Cup (which is still a very good idea)) and incentive to do well in the season, instead of purposely finishing lower in the ranks because you don't want to go up a division *AHEM* the way some teams did last season... Your idea sounds neat too though! |

Play-offs are a great idea, But not for the top 4 teams. If there are 3 places for promotion, the top 2 should be automatic, and the remaining position should be up for grabs with a play-off.. It's not fair to reward mediocrity, and punish excellence! e.g. Team A - 50 points Promoted Champion Team B - 40 Promoted Runner - Up --------------------------------------------- Team C - 39 Team D - 30 PLAY-OFF Team E - 30 Team F - 29 ---------------------------------------------- Team G - 28 Ultimately, Teams C - F should have a play-off of some sort. But it's not fair to include Team A and B in that. Think more similar to the UK Football League play-off system, as opposed to the NFL one!
