Ahhhhh It is logique en principe in some situations, but it still sucks being the student at the end of it! If a nursing student pumps too much of/ the wrong drug into your body that can result in negative consequences, even if they got the other 19 drugs perfectly correct. I was a finance student in France, so if I messed up one little bit - negative consequences for your portfolio - even if I made the right calls (pun intended) elsewhere. I guess it's a mean attempt a) bridging the gap between education and vocation, and b) the school covering their asses in case it emerges they are not equipping students well enough for real life. Still sucks to go through it, though! The most dangerous part, in my experience, was after all that. I was in France with this negative marking on an exchange year. The fun starts when you return to your home country and home system, where the format is usually that they will use a template method to transfer the foreign grades over to your system. France: 20 multiple choice questions, negative marking. UK: Done via %. Denmark: 7 possible grades between -2 and 12. I can say that it is possible (case in point) to get full marks in France and Denmark, and near enough impossible to get over 90% in most qualitative exams in the UK (case in point). One or two people in the whole year of 200+ will probably ever achieve it throughout a 3-year course in certain areas, mostly qualitative. The top grade in the UK (First Class) is anything above 70%, and it is hard to achieve consistently in qualitative assessment, trust me (case in point). Try explaining that you did really well, got 70% in the UK when your bureaucratic system slaps a disappointing grade on you in your home country, with no chance of reprieve. |

But, in spite of the strictness in the grading system, I would like to ask about the transparency. Are they transparent? Do you get to see how your exams are graded? Did you really get the 65 per cent grade you were given, or the authorities felt the number of First Class grades had to be downsized - considerably? As for me, I have been slapped with a couple of wrong and disappointing grades which are still unaccounted for. You know that bloody moment when you feel so good coming right out of an exam hall. "I just killed that exam bitch!" And you get a C in the end. Edited by Ali Agharabi 07-03-2015 10:01 |

Edited by Ali Agharabi 07-03-2015 10:01 like those courses where the Prof. tells you - A is for God B is for the Prof C is for the Best Student... That is why I hated my ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS(1 & 2) results. I had the feeling I have killed the exams both semesters 'cos Galileo Galileo was ringing in my head like Nicki Minaj's ANACONDA buh at the end - it was C & C |

"I just killed that exam bitch!" And you get a C in the end. In terms of qualitative exams I've never known the grading to be transparent or open to subsequent discussion. You'd very likely have to have solid enough grounds to be able to convince a disciplinary board that the teacher was acting in a biased, misguided or otherwise unprofessional manner. Certainly under the UK and Danish rules (probably French, too) you've no right to even ask for a grade to be investigated if you simply think you should have done/did better. I guess we've all had those kind of exams, and we'll be able to recall those situations more clearly than those in which we were pleasantly surprised by the result, such is human nature. Like in this game, when we win we deserve it and it's down to our own good work, and when we lose it's mostly someone else to blame, right?! |
