In a real game, midfielders and sometimes even defenders come way up forward to play set pieces like corners or free kicks close to the goal.
I would recommend the same here - it's silly that there are only one or two attackers in the goalmouth for a corner, just because the midfielders and defenders are "stuck" in their positions.

In general I think the players are way too strict about their positioning. There should be some freedom for a player with momentum to carry on a movement like a one-two - i.e. a midfielder who is running towards the goal should be able to one-two with a forward in order to beat a defender, such that the midfielder can carry on running at the goal. Right now he just passes and dutifully returns to his "zone" to watch the rest of the movement from there.

Yeah. Use advanced formation to specify where your player will be when the ball is in a certain part of the field. E.g. I play my LIM in a more offensive role. So I keep him a little above the centre when the ball is in the other half. This means that if any defender clears the ball, it will land at my LIMs feet and then he goes on to dribble the ball forward as my strikers are near the box. 25/01/2012 17:07

Oh. Wow.
I didn't even know that existed.
Thanks!

With advanced tactics, you can also decide your defensive tactics. E.g. when the ball is in your half, you can decide where your defensive will be, part by part. I utilise this to play the offside trap. My defenders hold a firm line when the ball is in my half, so as to catch the opposing forward offside. Remember, you're assigning your offensive tactics, when the ball is in your opponent's half, and you are assigning defensive tactics, when the ball's in your half.

In answer to your question, you can also push up your CDF/RDF/LDF to play as midfielders when you want.
